December 2008 acetic acid exports totalled 43,140 tonnes, down by almost 26% from 58,276 tonnes during the same month of 2007, according to the ITC data.
December exports also declined more than 12% from 49,465 tonnes in November 2008, the ITC said. The decline reflects the recession in the US as well as slumping economies in Latin America and Europe, according to market sources.
Mexico, Belgium, Spain and Brazil were the top export destinations in 2008, accounting for a collective 642,828 tonnes, or more than 78% of total shipments.
US Gulf coast export FOB (free on board) prices were $450-650/tonne (€351-507/tonne) over the past month, according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.
Major US acetic acid producers include BP, Celanese and Eastman Chemical.
