HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US exports of butyl acetate (butac) in January totalled 1,761 tonnes, dropping 56% from 4,042 tonnes in the same month of 2008, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Friday.
January butac exports plummeted almost 63% from 4,728 tonnes shipped out during December 2008, according to the ITC.
Butac's major downstream product is in the paints and coatings sector, which has been hit hard by the downturn in the housing and automotive industries.
Mexico, Canada and Brazil were the top US butac export destinations in January, accounting for 1,612 tonnes, or about 92% of total shipments, the ITC said.
US butac Gulf coast export FOB (free on board) prices were $1,323-1,411/tonne (€1,032-1,101/tonne) over the past month, according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.
