MTBE unlikely to return to US gasoline pool - NPRA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (ICIS news)--The gasoline additive methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) will likely never return to the domestic US gasoline fuel mix, the president of the of the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association (NPRA) said on Sunday.

β€œThe short answer is no, that [MTBE] will never come back,” Drevna said at the association's 107th annual meeting.

Drevna cited the emotion wrapped up in the debate over ethanol in the gasoline mix.

While still produced in the US, MTBE was phased out of the domestic gasoline pool and has been replaced with ethanol.

US producers of MTBE include LyondellBasell and Huntsman.
