ECHA launches Reach enforcement project across Europe

LONDON (ICIS news)--A Reach enforcement project including national inspections of chemical pre-registrations and registrations has started across Europe, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) said on Thursday.

REACH-EN-FORCE-1 inspectors would also check, where appropriate, the provisions for Safety Data Sheets made by registrants for substances under the Reach chemicals registration, evaluation and control mechanism.

The project enforces the core principle of Reach: “no data, no market”, the ECHA said.

“Inspectors in the participating countries will focus on the phase-in substances [existing substances] and check through inspections whether companies have submitted a pre-registration or a registration and, where necessary, whether a Safety Data Sheet has been supplied,” it added.

The project will give a first impression of the level of compliance by manufacturers and importers (including representatives of non European manufacturers) with Reach in the EU and European Economic Area.

The pre-registration phase for Reach was completed at the start of December last year and companies have until late 2010 to fully register under the scheme the high volume chemicals they wish to continue to sell in Europe.
