LONDON (ICIS news)--LyondellBasell has permanently closed its methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), isopropanol (IPA) and acetone operations at Berre, in France, as planned on Thursday, but will continue to run its di-isobutylene facility at the site, a company source said.

“We had about 80 employees affected by that closure. We were working out in close cooperation with the working council [for] appropriate solutions for these employees," the source said. "These solutions included redeployments at the site as well as retirements and early retirements within the social plan that is in place,” the source added.

LyondellBasell acquired the Berre manufacturing assets from Shell Chemicals last year and continued to serve Shell’s customers until its closure.

A Shell Chemical source and other solvent market players did not foresee any significant effect for IPA and MIBK supplies, stating that this could be covered by Shell’s Pernis facility.

However, the loss of Berre production was expected to affect those customers who could not be served by the Pernis site, such as for Isopropyl Ether (IPE), Hexylene Glycol and Acetone HP, which were only produced at the Berre facility.
