HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US refined glycerine imports for the first nine months of the year were 54,386 tonnes, down 36% from the 85,140 tonnes brought in the during the same period the year before, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Friday.

Refined glycerine imports in September were 6,252 tonnes, down 1% from 6,335 tonnes in August and 12% from the 7,072 tonnes imported in September 2008.

Glycerine demand in the US has been slowly growing after the market crashed late last year, causing buyers here to increasingly scout for supply from overseas. The US is a net importer of glycerine.

Malaysia was the largest supplier of US glycerine imports, shipping 34,089 tonnes in the first nine months of 2009, about twice the combined shipments of the next three largest sources - Indonesia at 7,781 tonnes, Germany at 6,246 tonnes and Belgium at 3,653 tonnes.

Major US glycerine buyers include Bayer, Colgate and Lonza.
