HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Canadian bioenergy firm Lignol Energy and PPG Industries will develop industrial coatings using plant-based lignin, the company said on Tuesday.

Under the companies' joint development agreement, Lignol said its HP-L lignin will replace some of the petrochemicals used in the coatings.

"There is a significant market trend toward products containing renewable and sustainable materials that have environmental and functional benefits," according to a statement by Chuck Kahle, PPG chief technology officer.

Lignol develops process technology used to produce cellulosic ethanol and lignin.
