LONDON (ICIS news)--Bayer MaterialScience has opened a €22m ($30m) pilot facility to manufacture carbon nanotubes at its Leverkusen site in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Germany-based polymers and plastics major said on Friday.

Bayer began construction of the plant, which has an annual capacity of 200 metric tons, in January 2009.

Bayer MaterialScience said the facility would help the company to gain a head start in supplying the demand for applications for multi-wall carbon nanotubes.

"Current forecasts predict an annual growth rate of 25% for carbon nanotubes. Within 10 years, the market is expected to be worth $2bn," said Joachim Wolff, a member of Bayer MaterialScience’s executive committee

"We are also expecting nanotechnology to create a total of 100,000 new jobs in the German industry in the medium term," Wolff added.

Bayer MaterialScience has also been operating a carbon nanotube pilot facility with an annual capacity of 60 metric tons, in Laufenburg in the German state of Baden-Württemberg since 2007.

"Under the right conditions, the next few years will see nanotechnology becoming a powerful branch of industry in Germany, offering attractive job prospects, innovative products and competitive solutions," said Steffen Kühling, head of production and technology in the coatings, adhesives, specialties segment of Bayer MaterialScience.
