LONDON (ICIS news)--Bayer MaterialScience has signed a contract with plant engineering company Uhde to build a new chlorine production facility based on common salt, the polymers and plastics major said on Tuesday.
Bayer said the plant, which would have an annual capacity of 20,000 tonnes, was planned to be built at Chempark Krefeld-Uerdingen. ?xml:namespace>
The group said it was the first time that chlorine has been produced on an industrial scale using oxygen depolarised cathode, and that the process meant that electricity consumption would be up to 30% lower than using the standard technology, which is currently one of the most energy-intensive processes in the chemical industry.
The new method of electrochemical chlorine production would result in an indirect reduction of up to 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year, Bayer added.
"The more CO2 emissions we can prevent across the globe, the better," said Tony Van Osselaer, a member of the Bayer MaterialScience board of management.
Sami Pelkonen, head of Uhde's electrolysis division, said: "As a technology company, we are always looking for solutions that offer our customers economic and ecological benefits."
Bayer said it has been using its oxygen depolarised cathode technology based on hydrochloric acid electrolysis on a large industrial scale at the Bayer Integrated Site Shanghai (BISS),
