HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Hexion Specialty Chemicals opened a urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins plant in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande Do Sul, the company said on Friday.

The plant will serve customers that make engineered wood panels, such as particle board, interior-grade plywood and medium-density fibreboard, Hexion said. Those wood products are used, in turn, to make furniture.

Hexion subsidiary Hexion Quimica Industria e Comercio operates the plant, which has a capacity of 450,000 tonnes/year of UF resins, the company said.

The site also produces formaldehyde, with a capacity of 150,000 tonnes/year, the company said.

Hexion estimated that the construction costs were $60m (€44m), of which 35% was related to environmental protection or safety features.
