SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Indian petrochemical major Reliance Industries has revived its Jamnagar cracker and derivatives project and hopes to complete it in 2014, a source close to the company said on Tuesday.

“The project is progressing; discussions are taking place for selection of technologies. A firm start up date will be set once contracts are awarded,” said the source.

“The cracker would have the capacity to produce 1.4m-1.6m tonnes/year of ethylene and some small volumes of propylene,” he added.

Capacities of derivatives, including mono ethylene glycol (MEG), low-density polyethylene (ldPE) and linear-low density polyethylene (lldPE), are being firmed up, he said.

While the principal feedstock for the cracker would be offgases from the company’s two worldscale refineries at Jamnagar, it would also utilise other refinery streams, he added.

The cracker project was announced in 2007 but was put on hold after the 2008 global economic crisis.

ICIS news had earlier reported that the company was looking at 1.1m tonnes/year of PE and 720,000 tonnes/year of MEG.

Besides the cracker Reliance has also revived plans for new capacities in purified terephthalic acid (PTA), polyester, styrene butadiene rubber and butadiene rubber (BR), said the source.

ICIS news had reported earlier that the new PTA plant would have a capacity of 700,000-1m tonnes/year while the polyester plant would be of 700,000 tonnes/year.

The source was unable to provide the start up schedule for these projects.
