TORONTO (ICIS news)--Dow Chemical is preparing to restart plants at its petrochemicals complex in Schkopau, Germany, following an electricity disruption that caused a complete production outage, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

The electricity disruption late Tuesday caused a fire at Dow's synthetic rubber plant at Schkopau and forced the company to take all its plants there offline, a spokesman told ICIS news. He was confirming a German media report.

The site's electricity had been restored and the fire had been quickly extinguished, he said.

Dow was now working to restart production at Schkopau, where it produces synthetic rubber, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, caustic soda, vinyl chloride monomer, and adhesives for the automotive industry, among other products, the spokesman said.

Dow had no timeline for when exactly the individual plants would be in production again, he said.

In addition to Dow, major firms with production at Schkopau include INEOS, Vinnolit, Equipolymers, Manuli Stretch and RP Compounds, among others.

Dow employs a staff of 6,000 in Germany, its second largest market after the US, according to its website.
