SINGAPORE (ICIS)--South Korea’s Samsung Petrochemical Co has shut its 450,000 tonne/year No 3 purified terephthalic acid (PTA) unit in Ulsan over the weekend because of on mechanical issues, a company source said on Monday.
A trader told ICIS that an outage had occurred at the unit’s air compressor, but the source from Samsung Petrochemical declined to comment on the issue.
However, the source said that the shutdown was expected to last for five days.
Samsung Petrochemical had recently completed a minor maintenance turnaround at the PTA unit in mid-August, according to another company source.
Offers for Korean PTA were heard pegged at $875–880/tonne (€691–695/tonne) CFR (cost & freight) China Main Port (CMP), unchanged from last Friday’s close despite a drop in PTA futures on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange, ICIS data showed.
Samsung Petrochemical runs three PTA lines in Ulsan and one in Daesan, South Korea.
The company’s three other PTA units, which have a combined capacity of 1.35m tonnes/year, were running normally, said the source.
