SINGAPORE (ICIS)--LANXESS held a groundbreaking ceremony in Nantong last week for the building of its new 30,000 tonne/year nitrile rubber (NBR) joint venture (JV) plant in northwestern Shanghai , the German specialty chemicals producer said on Monday.

The $50m (€39m) plant, which would have an initial capacity of 30,000 tonnes/year, was scheduled to start production in the first half of 2012, the company said.

The plant is a 50-50 JV between LANXESS and Taiwanese synthetic rubber producer TSRC, it said.

"We are responding to the growing demand for NBR in China with high-quality products,” said Günther Weymans, global head of LANXESS’ technical rubber products business unit.

“NBR is essential for the production of automobiles, as well as the construction, footwear, cable and plastics industries. In China, every one of these sectors is booming," Weymans said.

NBR is used in a wide range of applications such as seals, hoses for hydraulics and pneumatics, rubber gloves and elastic threads.
