LONDON (ICIS)--BASF plans to open a new system house in Tianjin, China, in an effort to strengthen its global polyurethane (PU) service and production network, the German petrochemicals major said on Monday.

The system house would provide sales and technical services to customers and follows a previously announced new system house at Chongqing, as well as two current system houses and development centres in Shanghai and Nansha, BASF  said.

The new site is to operate from 2012 onwards, BASF added.

A memorandum of understanding on the project was signed at Ludwigshafen, Germany, by Ni Xiangyu, vice chairman of the administrative commission of the Tianjin economic-technological development area, and Wayne Smith, the president of BASF’s polyurethanes division, the company said.

“The strategic location of the city is perfectly suited to serve the fast-growing north China markets, including the thriving centres of Beijing, Shenyang and Changchun. We expect the PU market in China to continue to grow at above average growth rates,” said Smith.

“Our investments in these sites will further bolster BASF’s worldwide system house network, all of which are fully supported by world-class production sites for PU basic material, including a TDI (toluene di-isocyanate) and MDI (methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate) production site in Caojing, Shanghai and our planned MDI plant in Chongqing,” Smith said.

Melanie Maas-Brunner, BASF's senior vice president of polyurethanes in the Asia-Pacific region, said: “We see a strongly growing domestic consumption for PU products in the areas of housing, living, infrastructure and transportation.”
