RIO DE JANEIRO (ICIS)--Arab Potash Co (APC) will inaugurate by mid-October a 500,000 tonne/year expansion of its muriate of potash (MOP) operations in Jordan, company sources said on Tuesday.

The increase will bring MOP production to 2.5m tonnes/year at the plant, which is on the southeast side of the Dead Sea, a source said.

The source was speaking on the sidelines of the IFA Production and International Trade Conference, held by the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA).

Of the extra production, half will be granular MOP and half will be standard/fine grade MOP.

The plant had started in September but was still operating at low levels. However, the producer expected rates to reach full capacity by the end of the year.

APC will market the new granular MOP to southeast Asia, South Africa and Europe.
