HOUSTON (ICIS)--SABIC Innovative Plastics will emphasise the aesthetic qualities and durability of its polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (PC-ASA) Geloy blends in targeting new market sectors, a company manager said on Thursday.
The blends are most commonly used in the automotive and transportation sectors, but will be targeted toward security, outdoor electronics, appliances and medical uses, said James Smithson, global product marketing manager with SABIC.
Smithson noted that any product using coloured Geloy blends, such as white or brightly coloured medical equipment used in hospitals, required no additional paint materials or maintenance to keep the specified colour looking new.
“It’s all around design and style,” Smithson said. “We can offer colour as our speciality.”
Other outdoors plastics uses, such as ATMs, would benefit from the durability and UV resistance of the Geloy brands, Smithson said.
SABIC will produce the feedstocks needed for the blends itself, it said.
Sources in the US PC market have said that demand has been high for PC in the electronics and consumer goods sectors in recent months, just as automotive and construction demand has waned.
