Bayer MaterialScience restarts China MDI unit, run rate at 70-80%

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) restarted its 350,000 tonne/year crude methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDI) plant in Shanghai, China, early this month, and the unit’s current run rate is at 70-80% of capacity, traders and buyers said on Tuesday.

The plant was taken off line at the end of November for annual maintenance.

BMS officials could not be reached for comment.

“The plant will…lower its operating rates to 60% as the Lunar New Year draws in, since demand will slow down significantly,” said a key southern China-based buyer.
