HOUSTON (ICIS)--US ammonia imports for 2010 were up 22% from 2009, according to data released by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Friday.

US 2010 ammonia imports rose by 22% to 6.74m tonnes from 5.50m tonnes in 2009.

Imports rose last year as a result of increased demand in North America for fertilizers, market sources said.

Imports in December rose 59% to 611,830 tonnes from 384,505 tonnes in December 2009, the ITC said.

December imports also rose by 1.1% from 609,496 tonnes in November 2010.

The biggest exporters of US ammonia were Trinidad & Tobago, Canada and Russia. Other sources included Ukraine and Egypt.
