LONDON (ICIS)--Slovnaft will permanently close its phenol and acetone production in Bratislava, Slovakia, for economic reasons, a company spokesperson said on Friday.

"We informed our customers that Slovnaft is going to finish phenol and acetone production by 30 June 2011 for economical and efficiency reasons,” he said.

"We not plan to open them again, the units are old and uneconomical,” the spokesperson added.

The facility has the capacity to produce 40,000 tonnes/year of phenol and 25,000 tonnes/year of acetone.

News of Slovnaft’s closure comes at a difficult time for the European phenol and acetone markets, which are already in a tight supply situation owing to production turnarounds and reduced output caused by feedstock cumene shortages in the US.
