HOUSTON (ICIS)--US chemical producer FMC plans to more than double soda ash capacity at its facility in Granger, Wyoming, by 2014, an engineering firm said on Thursday.

CH2M HILL, which won a contract to provide engineering and procurement services for the expansion, said work on the first phase of the project's design began last month.

"Phase II, upon approval of FMC's board of directors, will more than double the Granger plant capacity and has a target completion date of late 2013 to early 2014," CH2M Hill said. It
did not disclose capacities in terms of tonnes per year.

FMC media officials did not immediately respond to a request for additional comment.

The US soda ash producer said in January it would restart production at the mothballed Granger plant at a rate of 500,000 short tons/year by 1 July to meet soaring demand.

FMC’s nameplate capacity at Granger is 1.3m short tons/year (1.2m tonnes/year).
