LONDON (ICIS)--Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has pressed the start button on the Nord Stream pipeline that carries Russian natural gas directly to Germany via a route under the Baltic Sea, the Nord Stream joint venture said on Tuesday.

Technical gas needed to build up pressure in the €7.4bn ($10.4bn), 1,224km (761-mile) pipeline is now flowing from Vyborg in Russia, with German consumers expected to receive the first commercial deliveries of gas in October or November, it said.

New infrastructure will eventually allow Nord Stream gas to be delivered throughout central Europe, the joint venture added.
