HOUSTON (ICIS)--US phenol exports in August increased by 4% year on year and by 38% compared with July this year, according to data released on Tuesday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
US August 2011 phenol exports were 53,789 tonnes, up from 51,862 tonnes in the same month a year ago.
The biggest importer of US phenol for August this year was Korea, at 18,617 tonnes.
Thailand showed the biggest year-on-year tonnage growth, to 10,000 tonnes in August 2011 from 3,951 tonnes in August last year.
US phenol spot prices, as assessed by ICIS, were about $120–140/tonne (€86–101/tonne) cheaper than Asian spot prices throughout the month.
Month on month phenol exports were up from 38,859 tonnes in July 2011 as US prices fell below Asian prices in the middle of the month.
Major US phenol producers include Dow Phenol, Georgia Gulf, Honeywell, INEOS Phenol, SABIC Innovative Plastics and Shell Chemical.
