LONDON (ICIS)--German chemical major BASF plans to establish the global headquarters of its dispersions and pigments division in Hong Kong, because Asia is the sector’s largest market, the company said on Monday.

From January 2012, the division head and about 50 global positions, in Ludwigshafen and Basel, will move to Hong Kong, the company said.

Asia is already the largest market for our division today. We want to further participate in the dynamic growth in that region and beyond,” Markus Kramer, president of the dispersions and pigments division, said.

“By forming a global team at an international location we will also further increase [the] attractiveness of BASF as a global employer,” he added.

BASF said that all employees affected by the transition and who will not move to Hong Kong will be offered other positions within the company.

It added that the regional business and production units in Europe and Asia will not be affected by the move.

The dispersions and pigments division mainly comprises products for the coatings and paints industry.
