HOUSTON (ICIS)--US ammonia imports for 2011 were up 1% from 2010, according to data released by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Friday.

US 2011 ammonia imports rose to 6.81m tonnes from 6.74m tonnes in 2010.

Imports rose last year as a result of increased demand in North America for fertilizers and industrial uses, market sources said.

Imports in December fell to 484,113 tonnes from 611,830 tonnes in December 2010, the ITC said.

December imports also fell from 527,235 tonnes in November 2011.

The biggest exporters of ammonia to the US last year were Trinidad & Tobago at 3.77m tonnes, Canada at 1.16 tonnes, Ukraine at 588,445 tonnes and Russia at 546,043 tonnes.

Other sources included Egypt, Estonia, Venezuela, Taiwan and Korea.
