China’s Zhanjiang Dongxing builds new SM plant, start-up in 2013

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Zhanjiang Dongxing Refinery, a subsidiary of Sinopec, is in the process of building a new 60,000 tonne/year styrene monomer (SM) plant in Guangdong province, with the unit's start-up slated in 2013, a company source said on Wednesday.

Plant construction began in the second half of 2011, said the source.

The new plant will use dry gas process to produce SM, with the output intended for use of downstream polystyrene production in China, the source said.

Zhanjiang Dongxing’s 5m tonne/year refinery and aromatics unit that can produce 55,000 tonnes/year of benzene at the site in Zhanjiang city would provide the feedstock for the SM plant, said the source.
