SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Japanese aromatics major, JX Nippon Oil & Energy, shut down its Chita-based reformer that produces benzene on Wednesday evening as a result of mechanical problems, a company source said on Thursday.

The company had to halt production at the reformer and “some other units” at Chita, disrupting the production of benzene, paraxylene (PX) and cyclohexane (CX), the source added.

JX produces about 200,000 tonnes/year of benzene at Chita through its reformer and toluene disproportionation (TDP) unit.

The company is unable to estimate the production loss and it is uncertain as to when the issue will be resolved, the source added.
