SINAGPORE (ICIS)--China’s Jiaxing Petrochemical, a subsidiary of Tongkun Group, plans to start up two 750,000 tonne/year new purified terephthalic acid (PTA) units at Jiaxing in eastern China’s Zhejiang province in June, a company source said.

Jiaxing had originally planned to put one line on stream in April and the other in June, but has now decided to start up the two lines with a total capacity of 1.5m tonnes/year at the same time in June, the source said.

The company said it has secured over half of its feedstock paraxylene (PX) requirement for the new plants from Japan, Korea and China on a contract basis, and is still under negotiations with other suppliers for more PX supply.

The new PTA products will be fed into Tongkun Group’s own 1.6m tonne/year polyester yarn plants at Tongxiang in Zhejiang province, the source said.

PTA is the primary raw material in polyester production.

Other than the ongoing PTA project, Tongkun is building two 400,000 tonne/year polyester yarn plants at Huzhou in Zhejiang province and plans to start up the two units at the end of this year, the source said.

This will bring up Tongkun’s total polyester capacity to 2.4m tonne/year, the third Chinese polyester producer possessing more than 2m tonne/year polyester capacity, after Sanfangxiang Group and Hengyi Group.
