HOUSTON (ICIS)--US petrochemical producer Westlake has suffered an explosion and fire at its vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) plant in Geismar, Louisiana, a company spokesman said on Thursday.

The plant has a capacity of 550m lb/year (250,000 tonnes/year), according to the company.

Westlake could not confirm the extent of any damage or any effect on production, said David Hansen, spokesman. However, all personnel have been accounted for and there were no reported injures.

The fire has been contained and the unit that experienced the explosion has been secured, David Hansen said.

“Our focus is on containing the site and [ensuring] safety,” Hansen said. He said further details would be forthcoming.
