NOVA ethylene plantNEW YORK (ICIS)--Construction on the Vantage Pipeline, which will carry ethane from North Dakota, US, to Alberta, Canada, to feed into NOVA Chemicals’ petrochemical facility, is slated to begin in September 2012, a spokesman at the pipeline company said on Thursday.

“Construction is anticipated to start in September of this year pending regulatory approval for the US portion of the project,” said a spokesman for Canada-based Mistral Energy.

“The estimated in-service date is the third quarter of 2013,” he added.

The Vantage Pipeline will carry ethane from a source near Tioga, North Dakota, US, to Alberta, Canada, where NOVA Chemicals operates its Joffre petrochemical complex with polyethylene (PE) operations.

NOVA Chemicals has 2.8m tonnes/year of ethylene capacity at its Joffre complex.

Vantage Pipeline is an affiliate of Mistral Energy. In July 2010, Mistral Energy, US-based energy firm Hess and Canada-based NOVA Chemicals signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to transport ethane from Hess’ Tioga gas plant in North Dakota, through the proposed pipeline to Alberta, Canada, where NOVA would buy 100% of the ethane.

The pipeline is expected to initially transport 45,000 bbl/day of ethane, and would be expandable to carry 60,000 bbl/day. It will be 430 miles long.
