HOUSTON (ICIS)--KBR won a contract to design and build an ethylene furnace for INEOS at its Chocolate Bayou site in Texas, the US engineering firm said on Tuesday.

The furnace will add 465m lb/year (211,000 tonnes/year) of capacity at the complex, KBR said, adding it will use KBR’s proprietary technology.

KBR did not disclose the financial terms of the contract.

INEOS has two crackers at the site, with a combined capacity of 1.792m tonnes/year, according to ICIS plants and projects.

INEOS said on 28 January it planned to boost capacity at its Chocolate Bayou complex in Texas by 6.5% in 2013.

In addition to its crackers in Chocolate Bayou, INEOS has 950,000 tonnes/ year of high density polyethylene (HDPE) capacity at La Porte, Texas, and in its joint venture HDPE operation with Chevron Phillips Chemical.

Several companies are mulling the construction of new crackers or debottlenecking projects in the US.
