Evonik hopes to repair damaged CDT plant by December

LONDON (ICIS)--Evonik hopes to fully repair its cyclododecatriene (CDT) plant at Marl chemical park near Duisburg, Germany, by December, following an explosion in March which killed two workers, the German-based chemical producer said on Tuesday.

The blast, which happened on 31 March, severely damaged the plant causing a substantial fall in CDT production.

An estimated 40% of the world's nylon 12 capacity was taken out following the explosion, leaving automotive customers scrambling to find alternatives.

Several chemical companies have stepped in to help with the shortage, including US-based firms Dupont and Invista.

CDT is used to make laurolactam which, in turn, is used as a monomer in nylon 12.
