Correction: In the ICIS news story headlined "US Rennovia produces adipic acid at 1 lb/hour via new process" dated 1 May 2012, please read in the fourth paragraph …cyclohexane-based petrochemical route… instead of …hexane-based petrochemical route…. A corrected story follows.
ORLANDO, Florida (ICIS)--Rennovia is producing adipic acid (ADA) at a rate of about 1 lb/hour at the pilot stage of its new ADA manufacturing technology process, an official at the US-based chemical firm said on Monday.
Gary Diamond, vice president product development, said the two-step process, which begins with glucose, had been run for thousands of hours in continuous reactors and with multiple catalysts.
“We are now designing the next stage, which is the commercial demonstration unit,” Diamond said. “We're looking at the 1 tonne/day scale. And then the next stage is commercial.”
He said the company had built detailed models to compare the cost of Rennovia’s process with the cyclohexane-based petrochemical route and found a “robust” advantage in capital costs and operating expenses when oil was priced at $50/bbl (€38/bbl).
Diamond was speaking at the World Congress of Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing, which is being held in Orlando, Florida on 29 April-2 May.
