HOUSTON (ICIS)--US maleic anhydride (MA) exports were 4,958 tonnes in April, down 16% from the same month one year earlier, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Friday.
Exports in April were also 16.8% lower than the 5,962 tonnes shipped in March, the ITC said.
Nearly 50% of MA is used in the manufacture of unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), which are used heavily in the recreational boating industry and related uses. Demand in that sector remains dampened in the still-sluggish economy.
Canada was the top destination for US MA exports in April at 2,241 tonnes, followed by Mexico, the UK and Brazil.
Major US MA producers include Huntsman, LANXESS, Ashland and Flint Hills Resources.
