SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China is targeting a total photovoltaic installation of 21 gigawatt (GW) in its 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), a source from the China Silicon Industry Association said on Wednesday.

China is the largest polysilicon and solar cell producer now in the world and most PV [photovoltaic] power stations are located in eastern and central China,” said the source.

“The updated target is a positive signal for PV industry as China’s PV industry has suffered losses since the fourth quarter of 2011. The government wants to boost PV development along with the target,” the source added.

The country’s photovoltaic installation capacity was 2.7GW in 2011 and this is expected to reach 5-7GW in 2012, the source said.
