SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Shaoxing Yuandong shut its 600,000 tonne/year purified terephthalic acid (PTA) No 1 plant in Zhejiang province on 15 July as it prepares for the full start-up of its new plant, a source close to the company said on Tuesday.

The new plant – the company’s fourth – that can produce 1.4m tonnes/year of PTA has two lines with equal capacity. The first line started operations in May and is currently running at 70% of capacity, while no exact date has been set for the start-up of the second line, the source said.

The No 1 line is expected to be shut for about 20 days as the company is trying to manage its inventory, wary of excess capacity in the domestic Chinese market, the source said.

Shaoxing Yuandong’s No 2 and No 3 PTA plants that have the same 600,000 tonne/year capacity are currently running at 90% of capacity, the source said.

Taking into account a possible supply overhang in the Chinese PTA market, the company may decide to shut the No 2 and No 3 plants when the fourth plant fully starts up, the source said.
