SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s ethylene capacity will cover 68% of its domestic demand by 2020 despite the scheduled start-up of a number of new crackers over the next few years, a consultant of the China National Chemical Information Center (CNCIC) said on Thursday.

China’s total ethylene capacity is expected to hit 25m tonnes/year by 2015 and 32m tonnes/year by 2020, said CNCIC's deputy manager for refining and petrochemical business, Arley Li.

China’s local ethylene supply shortfall is estimated at 18m tonnes/year by 2020, he said at the China Petrochemical Industry Conference, a one-day event held in Singapore.

About 13m tonnes of new ethylene capacity is expected to come on stream in China between 2012 and 2020, he added.
