LONDON (ICIS)--BASF shut down its 345,000 tonne/year ethylene oxide (EO) plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany, on Friday for planned maintenance, a company source said.

"We just started the shutdown of the EO plant today at 7am," the source said. "We need to ship pure EO (PEO) to Ludwigshafen to support our customers."

A small amount of the 25,000 tonne/year ethylene glycol (EG) capacity will be lost, but the 350,000 tonne/year EG unit in Antwerp, Belgium, will still run, he added.

The Ludwigshafen unit is scheduled to be down until 7 September.
