LONDON (ICIS)--German authorities on Friday issued an all clear after fire fighters and experts successfully emptied a damaged toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) tank at a foam production site in Oestrich-Winkel, west of Wiesbaden, they said.

The tank, at the site of foam products firm Koepp Schaum, was damaged in an accident on Monday, resulting in a leakage. Koepp uses TDI to produce foam products.

Oestrich-Winkel town officials said that the damaged tank no longer poses a threat.

The site was released back to Koepp at 16:00 Germany time, subject to a number of conditions, officials said without disclosing what those conditions were.

The cause of Monday’s accident remains unclear. Regional environmental authorities and prosecutors have begun an investigation, they said. According to police, 26 people suffered injuries and were hospitalised for a short period following the accident.

Koepp did not respond to an ICIS request for comment. However, German media reported a member of Koepp’s management as saying that the company would “question self-critically what had happened”.

The accident caused fear among many residents of the scenic wine town on the Rhine river, reports said.

The 1984 Bhopal chemical disaster in India involved the leakage of methyl isocyanate. In 2009, US officials criticised Germany's Bayer for its handling of an accident in 2008 in West Virginia that involved the release of methyl isocyanate.
