SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Japan’s Asahi Kasei E-materials has started commercial operations at a new slitting facility for its Hipore lithium-ion battery separators at Suzhou in Jiangsu province in China, the company said on Thursday.

Lithium-ion battery separators are microporous polyolefin sheets placed between a battery’s anode and cathode that acts as “fuse” in case of overheating, Asahi Kasei E-materials said in a statement.

“While market growth continues in mainstream LIB [lithium-ion battery] applications for portable devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs [personal computers], significant additional growth is forecasted in electric vehicle applications,” the company said.

The new slitting unit is located at Asahi Kasei Electronics Materials (Suzhou)’s production site at Suzhou Industrial Park in China, it added.

Financial details of the new facility was not disclosed.
