LONDON (ICIS)--?xml:namespace>Switzerland’s chemical industry supports plans to upgrade the Gotthard road tunnel to Italy by adding a second tube, an industry association said on Friday.
Scienceindustries, which represents Switzerland-based chemicals and pharmaceuticals producers, said that the Gotthard road tunnel is a critical European transportation bottleneck. The tunnel currently has only two lanes - one for each direction.
The chemicals and pharmaceuticals industries, as Switzerland’s largest exporters, need safe and reliable transport routes to supply their customers in Europe, the group said.
According to the association, delays in logistics have immediate domino effects throughout the logistics supply chain and damage Switzerland’s economy.
Switzerland’s government has proposed to build out the Gotthard tunnel with a second tube, primarily to improve safety.
Switzerland’s voters are expected to decide on the second Gotthard tube in a referendum, likely to be held in 2015.By: Stefan Baumgarten+1 713 525 2653
