SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China's Jiaxing Petrochemical is running its new purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant with a total capacity of 1.5m tonnes/year at 60% capacity, after starting it up on 9 September, a company official said on Tuesday.

The subsidiary of Tongkun Group, the fifth largest polyester manufacturer in China, had started up the plant’s first 750,000 tonne/year reactor on 1 September. The plant is located at Jiaxing in Zhejiang province.

The Chinese producer started up the plant’s second 750,000 tonne/year reactor on 9 September, according to the source.

“The plant had achieved on-spec production before the second reactor is started up and now we are looking forward to achieving high-quality product by this weekend,” the source said.

While the output from the new PTA plant is largely for captive use, Jiaxing Petrochemical may sell excess cargoes to the spot market once it can produce high-quality material, the source added.

PTA is the primary feedstock of polyester production. A 1.5m tonne/year PTA plant can meet the requirements for the production of 1.7m tonnes/year of polyester products.
