SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Sinopec Maoming plans to start up its new 10m tonne/year crude distillation unit (CDU) at Maoming in Guangdong province in December, refining giant Sinopec said in a statement on Monday.

Construction of the unit will be completed on 15 October, according to the statement by the refiner's parent company Sinopec.

The new CDU will strengthen the refiner’s market presence in the gasoline, diesel and chemicals sectors in southern China, the statement added.

The CDU will ensure a supply of naphtha feedstock for the refiner’s proposed cracker expansion.

Sinopec Maoming currently operates two crackers with a combined capacity of 1m tonnes/year at the same site and it plans to double its total cracker capacity by 2020.

The refiner runs four other CDUs with a total capacity of 13.5m tonnes/year at the same site in Maoming.
