SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Wacker Chemie is building a new 40,000 tonne/year vinyl acetate ethylene (VAE) copolymer dispersions plant at Ulsan in South Korea, the German specialty chemicals maker said on Monday.

The new plant, in which the company will invest around €10m ($8m), will almost double Wacker Chemie’s VAE dispersion capacity at Ulsan when the unit starts up in January next year, Wacker Chemie said in a statement.

The new plant is aimed at meeting fast-growing demand in high-quality VAE dispersions, especially from southeast Asia, it said.

Output from the new plant has applications in the paints and coatings, construction, nonwoven, paper and carpet industries, according to the Wacker Chemie.

The project in Ulsan follows the company’s 60,000 tonne/year expansion project at its production site in Nanjing, China that is expected to come on-stream by mid-2013, the company said.
