HOUSTON (ICIS)--US ethylene dichloride (EDC) exports were 52,685 tonnes in August, up by 44% from the 36,507 tonnes shipped in the same month one year earlier, according to the US International Trade Commission data (ITC) on Friday.
US EDC exports were also 23% higher month on month than the 42,763 tonnes shipped in July, according to the ITC.
Overseas demand for US EDC, a precursor to polyvinyl chloride (PVC), has risen in recent months because of the feedstock cost advantage of ethylene derived from natural gas, according to market sources.
Top destinations for US EDC in August were Korea at 31,503 tonnes, followed by China, Mexico and Japan.
Major US producers of EDC include Dow Chemical, Formosa, Georgia Gulf and Shintech.
