TOKYO (ICIS)--Spanish chemical producer Ube Engineering Plastics plans to build a new 10,000 tonne/year nylon 6 unit to expand its current capacity at Castellon, Valencia, its Japanese parent company Ube Industries said on Thursday.

The move is to meet growing demand for high added-value nylon in Europe and North America, the company added.

The unit is expected to come on stream in March 2015, the company said in a statement.

As needs for environmentally-friendly films is growing, demand for nylon used in packaging films for food and toiletry products and detergents is also increasing, specifically as a substitute for polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) films, Ube Industries said.

Ube Industries currently produces 20,000 tonnes/year nylon 6 at Castellon, 53,000 tonnes/year in Japan and 75,000 tonnes/year in Thailand, according to the company.
