HOUSTON (ICIS)--Rockwood’s 5,000 tonnne/year lithium hydroxide plant expansion at Kings Mountain, North Carolina, is running well after starting production in the third quarter, the CEO of the US-based specialty chemicals firm said on Thursday.

Seifi Ghasemi said that Rockwood has begun sending sample product from the plant to customers.

“In terms of purity, [the product] is significantly ahead of what anyone else can produce,” Ghasemi told analysts during Rockwood’s third-quarter results conference call.

Ghasemi also said that Rockwood’s new lithium facility in Chile is expected to start up in 2014.

Rockwood expects its annual lithium hydroxide sales to increase by 10% to 12%, he added.
