MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--US ethylene oxide (EO) estimated production in the third quarter fell by 6.6% year on year, the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) said on Wednesday.

Estimated EO production totalled 1.55bn lb (703,000 tonnes) in the third quarter, down from a revised 1.66bn lb in the third quarter of 2011, according to the AFPM.

While no reason was given by the NPRA for the 6.6% slide, during the third quarter the market saw a rash of production issues.

Compared with the second quarter of 2012, EO production was up 1.3%, from a revised 1.53bn lb.

September prices for US EO were 51.60–61.10 cents/lb ($1,138-1,347/tonne, €876-1,037 /tonne) FOB (free on board) USG (US Gulf), as assessed by ICIS.

Major US EO producers include BASF, Dow Chemical, Eastman Chemical, Huntsman, Shell and Indorama.
