WASHINGTON (ICIS)--US chemical producers and plastics manufacturers both added about 1,600 new workers in October, the Labor Department said on Friday, and both sectors have increased employment from year earlier levels.

In its monthly employment report, the department said that the nation’s chemicals producers had 802,700 workers on the job last month, up from 801,100 in September.

In plastics and rubber products, the October workforce grew to 650,400 from September’s reading of 648,800, the department said.

Compared with October 2011, the US chemicals industry workforce has grown by 1.2%, and the plastics sector has expanded its labour pool by 2.5%, according to the department’s data.

Overall, the department said that the US added 171,000 new jobs in October, but the nation's unemployment rate rose slightly to 7.9% from September's 7.8% reading as an almost equal number of workers lost their jobs and more people entered the workforce.
