Russian chlorine leak kills three, authorities launch investigation

MOSCOW (ICIS)--Russian authorities will launch an investigation into a chlorine leak at manufacturer VSMPO-Avismin’s plant in Berezniki which killed three workers, the Russian Regional Investigation Committee in the Perm region said on Wednesday.

The chlorine leak on Wednesday afternoon also left four workers in a critical condition in hospital, according to the statement.

The Committee also said the chlorine leak was of no threat to adjacent areas. Local media reports suggest that up to 50 employees of VSMPO-Avisma sought medical assistance.

VSMPO-Avisma, based in Berezniki, is Russia's largest titanium producer. Berezniki is also Russia's fertilizer production hub where Uralkali and other major producers are based.
